It's sad but sometimes one must take a look around oneself and say "Is everyone around me really as dense as I think they are?" and it's even sadder when that answer is yes. Honest, I'm just trying to do the right thing as best I can. You don't need to be so hard on me.

School is coming down to the wire, especially for senior design. The project is coming along fairly well, though we are a bit behind. My other classes are going pretty decent, microprocessors is kicking my butt.

Every so often (daily) I wish I hadn't been an engineer.

Oh well.

The other I've known for a few months and went for the guy she's known half of her life.

Man I have no luck. Looks like it's pretty much over finally with these two.

<_< Oh but I'm so "WHINEY"... fuck that noise, I'm not whiney, I'll admit, It's mostly I have too strong of an opinion. But I guess that's where I need a woman with equally strong of one.

not to mention the other chicks that I've dealt with, who just seem to have mental disorders or something:

1) "All women are shallow"
2) "You're closed minded for disliking things that involve people being closed minded."

WTF!

And you would think this would be a lesson to women, but this is probably just making them think less of me. I mean if they want equality, they should think equally. They should also not go for the jerk who acts nice and turns out to be .. well .. a jerk. But I guess it's because of those guys, that makes me more appealing to women.

chibiskuld: More YG stuff, Why do I keep thinking these things?

Some people tell me I shouldn't give up on making her my girlfriend and that I should do whatever it takes to win her over, even if she has a boyfriend already.

Most people tell me that she's not worth the head ache, sounds a bit crazy, and that I should never talk to her again and stay away so I don't end up hurt.

No one, tells me I should remain her friend either way. She hides me from her mom because of stuff that happened in the past and because her mom, now more obvious after my and YG's last conversation, really hates me. Though I wonder if that's only because her mom is acting towards her as she would expect her too. Because of this we can't ever really do anything with each other. I can't keep hiding from her mom, I can't keep silent when her mom calls while she's hanging out. I honestly believe she should be able to do what she wants without worrying about her mom. (Yes she lives with her still). If her mom knew and started yelling at me about it and making obscene phone calls, well I'm prepared to deal with it. Besides, "You don't still hang out with that Joe guy" (quote from her mom recently) Makes it sound like she knew and didn't really care, but just had strong opinions...

So with that I have 2 questions I'd like you all to answer:
1) What do you people honestly think I should do with YGNULL
2) Should she just hang out without having to hide it from her mom and if her mom knows oh wellNULL (I'll just stay away from her mom.)

This time I'm asking all of you to visit here and now. Tell me if you think I should still be her friend and answer these questions 2.

YG this is a chance to write something on your behalf, and let people know that maybe I'm wrong about things. A chance to tell them why it is you want me as your friend. If you don't take it I understand.

and if you think wanting to know 'what you think' is whining, well g0 aw3h.

Chad Gross: Klackles, mountain climbing, and cheap honeycrisp apples

<p>We made another expedition up to <a href="http://www.ci.greenville.mi.us/">Greenville</a> to visit <a href="http://www.klackleorchards.com/">Klackles</a>. We had the usual fun with the kids, cider, donuts, and exhaustion after five hours of running around. The highlight was seeing Sammi climb up an inflatable mountain that was fifteen to twenty feet high, fall about ten feet to the bottom, and than climb back up again. The terror on her face was classic but it didn't faze. She got back up and climbed again. Eventually went up and down the slide on the other side four or five more times. She may be tiny but there's a lot going on underneath those pigtails.</p>

<p>One fun thing was that the place had <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeycrisp">honeycrisp</a> apples several dollars cheaper than any other place we've seen. We would have stocked up but we'd already picked a peck of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cortland_(apple)">cortland</a> apples as part of our admission. Honeycrisps weren't available to pick just at the store.</p>

<p>Everyone had fun and Henry and Mommy slept from when we left at 4:30pm through the night. :)</p>

Chad Gross: Too many accounts... Too many places...

<p>I have way too many email address, im accounts, social network accounts, websites, etc. I don't even use them really. My spreadsheet of accounts hit over 60 items before I gave up and began relying on "forgot password" to retrieve them if I need them.</p>

<p>I have four email accounts. This is after some significant pruning over the last few months. I receive almost no email from human beings. It is almost all spam, mailing lists, and "forgot password" messages.</p>

<p>I also have accounts on five different social networking sites. I get curious about the interface, etc and create an account. I rarely use them but they're there so I have urge to logon periodically and see if anything has changed.</p>

<p>First, there was <a href="http://www.orkut.com/Main#Profile.aspx?uid=9325148015437201176">Orkut</a>. It is apparently Google's social networking site. I'm told its popular in Brazil but otherwise unremarkable. I do remember the first few months it was just so slow it was unusable.</p>

<p>Second, there was <a href="http://www.bebo.com/ChadG98">Bebo</a>. I'm not sure who originally signed up but they emailed all their friends who signed up and emailed all of their friends. Near as I can tell no one knew what it was and never touched it again. I'm told its big in Europe.</p>

<p>Third, there was <a href="http://www.imeem.com/bellidore/">imeem</a>. I have some friends who work there. I'm not sure how much socialization is done but they have deals with all of the major record labels so you can stream music from their site for free. It is probably worth looking at just for that reason alone.</p>

<p>Fourth, there is <a href="http://www.myspace.com/bellidore">Myspace</a>. I created this one because a friend of mine from college had a page on it and I figured it would give me a chance to reconnect with him. I got lazy, never emailed him, and now he's moved to Pennsylvania. I really should email him but than again I haven't spoken with either of the guys who were in my wedding in a long time either.</p>

<p>Fifth, there is <a href="http://www.new.facebook.com/people/Chad_Gross/1230767173">Facebook</a>. This one is the most interesting because it seems to have a bunch of active users. Although, that could just be the people I know rather than an overall thing. I do like the fact that it seems to keep things a little more private by default.</p>

<p>The IM thing isn't any better. I use <a href="http://www.adiumx.com/">Adium</a> for instant messaging because it can connect to a number of different services at once. This is nice that you can be logged into them all without having a bunch of apps running. It is bad when you consider that I chat with someone approximately once a month. I'd list them for posterity but unlike the Social Networking sites they're tied to email addresses and I get enough spam. :)</p>

<p>Not sure what the point of this article is but it killed some time and isn't that what the internet is for?</p>

Chad Gross: Rain... Rain... Go away! Little Johnny wants to play!

<p>We're at about 48 hours of near constant rain. I feel sorry for the kids. They desperately want to get outside and run around. We've tried to find places for them to get some energy out but it hasn't been easy.</p>

<p>Melissa's sister and her family are out for the Houghton Open golf tournament. Melissa's dad and brother in law go up north to golf and the mom and sisters get to spend some time together. Unfortunately, the rain cut the tournament short early. Plus, three kids and two dogs underfoot made it difficult for the girls to get much time together. I did the best I could to help keep the kids busy but there's not much you can do when everyone's in the house together. Last night we had Miss Jessica come over and baby sit Henry, Samantha and their cousin Nolan so all of the adults could at least get out of the house.</p>

<p>We went to the <a href="http://www.thegilmorecollection.com/Flat%20River%20Grill/eastmain.html">Flat River Grill</a>. It is one of <a href="http://www.thegilmorecollection.com/">The Gilmore Collection</a> and we've pretty much determined that other than <a href="http://www.thegilmorecollection.com/Rose%27s/roses.html">Rose's</a>, none of them have food that is particularly great.</p>

<p>I'll also take this time to mention that I'll *never* willingly go back to the <a href="http://www.thegilmorecollection.com/The%20B.O.B./The%20B.O.B./thebob.html">The B.O.B.</a> I've never been treated so rudely anywhere else. I am normally a pretty laid back guy but these folks seemed to go out of there way to make me go away. We were there less than five minutes and I see no reason to go back. There's plenty of other places that I haven't tried yet.</p>

<p>One of these days we're going to do more than see the Tigers play and leave but not this time. We drove past the old stadium and it was in pretty sad shape. It looks like they're about a third of the way through demolition. It sounds like they may be able to <a href="http://www.savetigerstadium.org/">save the field</a> at least. I figure that's more important than building. Although, I liked the old double-decker more than the newer style stadiums. It felt more like a world apart.</p>

<p>We stopped at the <a href="http://www.cityofhowell.org/">Howell</a>, <a href="http://www.tangeroutlet.com/howell ">outlet mall</a> on the way home. It was interesting to see the different types of outlets. Most of them were just normal retails stores but there were a few that got into the spirit of things. Those ranged from a small section of discount stuff to a couple who were almost entirely clearance stuff. We got some gift shopping done and picked up a few things for ourselves. We should have checked out the downtown. I suppose if we have more time when we go next.</p>

<p>It was nice to get away but I'm glad to be back with the kids. I'm not away from them much and it still feels weird.</p>

It is tied into a weight loss "game" that Melissa has for her Nintendo DS. Luckily it was waiting for us and we only lost about twenty minutes.</p>

<p>The hotel was a <a href="http://www.hiexpress.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/DTTWB/welcome">Holiday Inn Express</a> that was a little nicer than last year's and much cheaper. It was also about the same distance from the stadium. This time around we walked instead of taking the people mover. The people mover was fine last year but we had time and could use the exercise.</p>

<p>The weather for the game wasn't bad but it was a bit chilly. We got there plenty early so we were able to get our free hat, wander the stadium, and get Melissa a new Tigers t-shirt. I'm not sure what the deal was but the "D" on the shirt we got her last year faded to almost invisibility. I'm not sure what the deal was since I had an almost identical shirt and it looks as good as new.</p>

<p>The game was good and close. Nate Robertson pitched a pretty good game and we led most of the way. Unfortunately, they blew a number of opportunities to extend the lead. The end was pretty typical for the season. Leyland called in the bullpen and soon we were losing. Throw in a few more blown opportunities to score and the game was over. I'm glad we went and overall the game was good. I just hope that if we go again next year that the pitching will better.</p>

I feel kinda bad taking two days off the second of school knowing that we're really busy but this is one of the few things I do for fun so they'll just have to survive. Next year though I'm going to have to try and get tickets earlier so we can find a weekend and make it a non-issue.</p>

<p>The one thing I am concerned about is that it is supposed to be rainy this week. One report said it may clear up long enough for tomorrow's game. We'll just have to see though. If it gets called on account of rain we'll probably not get a chance to see the makeup game. It doesn't happen too often and the report's seem to think we should be fine. Here's hoping that it's a good game and not a blow out.</p>

<p>A few years ago I broke down and bought a wireless router for my DSL back home. I do not own a laptop but I occasionally bring home my laptop from work. This only merits mention for two reasons. One was that I got it on clearance for five bucks. The other is that I saw my new neighbor for the first time when he was using my wireless internet around midnight on my front lawn. Weird.</p>

<p>It finally died the other day and after a week or two of looking I finally broke down and went to buy a new one. Those ended up being over fifty bucks so I resigned myself to a more run of the mill model. I hit various office supply and electronics stores and the best deal was at Sears of all places. I was going to head back there when I stopped at Meijer for a few groceries. I came out with a forty dollar router for seventeen bucks. :)</p>

veggiespam: flying to sleep

The last two times I flew to Europe, the journey took 7-8 hours. However, this time I flew into Dublin, slightly closer to the US if you look at a non-flat map. Nothing against this airport or the flight (both nice), but this flight doesn’t give you enough time to take a nap to get acclimated to the time zones. JFK to DUB is normally 5h30m - but my flight left 5 minutes early since everyone actually got on board quickly, the taxi time was reduced for whatever reason, plus we had a tail wind. Thus, I ended up landing way over an hour early at 4am local time. People on #geekboy are still awake - it’s only 11pm! I’d hop on irc to say hello, but I seem to be without wireless (I blame my wunderbar laptop).

So, I have come to the conclusion that doesn’t count as a transatlantic flight - it is quicker than Denver to New York. Imagine a flight from Boston to Reykjavik: it would make EWR to ORD seem long.

At least a bunch of old guys are speaking Gaelic right now.

And, I got rid of all my small coins I’ve been holding since last year. One half-litre (16.9 US fl oz / 17.6 UK fl oz) bottle of Diet Coke: €1.80. I’ll let you do the math accounting for the “airport price factor” to determine if that is a good deal or not. It is too bloody dark outside and early to think.

Overall, the lesson here is: no sleep (guitar riff) ’til München.

that should have been obvious from the time I met her again. Goes to show I can hardly trust anyone. I relied on her to understand how I felt back then (4 years ago). And relied on her to wait for me... But instead she falls in love with some other guy because "she's lonely"... Not having any concern for how I would feel the day I met her again.

It sounds like the kuzuri con staff all agree she shouldn't be co-chair... I didn't bring this up, they did... Right now, that's the only reason I don't tell her to fuck off right now. Today was suppose to be an important day for us (me and her) and she 'forgot' and 'planned' other things...

But that leads me to another point, this girl I met online from GR... she e-mailed me wanting to give it a chance, 2 weeks later and she still can't find the time to meet.

I'm tired of people who can't commit... Quit playing with me and go away. In other words, FUCK OFF!

Brian: Adventures in Real Life

Today I went to the library. The real library. With actual paper. It was my first time to any San Francisco library. I went to the main branch downtown in the big fancy building. It’s pretty awesome as far as libraries go. But then it should be seeing as how…

The Main Library is the resource center for the entire San Francisco Public Library system and the libraries of Northern California.

Cool, huh? So they have a lot of books. Today was just an overview though so I started out on the 1st floor and wandered through the Fiction/Mystery/Sci-Fi stacks. There’s something about looking at physical copies of books by my favorite authors. Perhaps it validates them in my mind as “good” authors. As if there are no books written by bad authors. When I got to the aisle where I expected to find all of Neal Stephenson’s books, I found some guy, maybe 65-75 years old, who engaged me in probably the most thought-provoking conversation I’ve had so far today. Maybe even this week.

We talked authors and sci-fi, and how it’s often a misunderstood genre, while I was pointing out that exactly one of Neal Stephenson’s books had made it to those shelves (there were a few more in plain-old fiction and perhaps others in even more generic or specific stacks). Then we talked real science and politics and technology and space. Hard to say where these things come from. I suppose many sci-fi fans share some interests in at least a couple of these topics. Sci-fi tends to be about the future. Whenever a story takes place, you can usually place it in your own timeline as something to seek or avoid. Many works can be found in the sci-fi stacks about cloning, space elevators, interplanetary travel and more general topics like morality, politics and religion. Orson Scott Card’s series that began with “Ender’s Game” starts out quite simple but by “Xenocide” and “Children of the Mind” becomes very philosophical. I’m curious to see where Neal Stephenson’s next book “Anathem” will be shelved.

So back to the conversation I was having. This guy wants to put floating habitats up in space, which is the topic of many sci-fi books, but he really wants to do it. He’s starting a political party with very forward-thinking ideas. IE: Set up organizations to measure the carbon effect of everything, make people and companies responsible and carbon-neutral, build houses in space, etc. Cool ideas, for sure, but that an everyday voter would even understand what he’s trying to do is quite far fetched. Take Sarah Palin, for instance. She’ll teach our children that the world is 6000 years old and that fact is not enough to stop her from getting into the White House. Either people don’t care enough about science, or they do, and they call it God.

Enough about that. Time to eat this delicious $5 footlong from Subway. Mmm. Toasty! It’s too bad I’m not popular enough to get it for free just for mentioning them in my blog. They also might not want me to use slogans from the competition. But I do what I want! If I want to say Subway is Mmm Toasty there’s no stopping me! If I want to say it’s 15 minutes can save you 15% or more then that’s just what I’ll do! For the record… the sandwich was actually $6.50. But then, I didn’t wait 15 minutes.

Two people need me, but they won't let me be close to them, the way I want to be with them... So they use me, to fill their void until she can be with him, and until she can find someone to be with, but not to jump to conclusions with her, it's probably until she can settle in the place where she wants to be... Why do I put up with this? Why do I let these two walk all over me...

"I don't know how to comfort you" she says, well that's because you don't understand my feelings, and you don't understand your own. Once you do, then you'll realize what I've been telling you all along, we can't be friends as long as you believe you love that man. That's why you can't do anything to comfort me without appearing to be misleading... Though, I don't mind still trying to be friends, and in order for that to work is for me to get over you...

Which is where and why I've been so persistent with the other one... Who needs to decided already if I have any place in her life, because I'm moving to GR, I'm not gonna be in Kalamazoo anymore, and you're moving to Arizona... Like I told you before, I'm already in a bad situation with YG, I don't need that with you too, so you'll just have to figure out what you want.

Well it's my first day on the job, so I'm gonna leave a note here for those who've helped that are my closest friends.

YG, that's the first time I ever heard you say 'I'm sorry' for something like that.. And you thoughtfully said good luck. Thank you very much. But you REALLY need to stop hiding me from your mom. It feels like our friendship is a lie.

DC, If you are serious about me, then we can make it through this, otherwise, please don't waste your time. I'm still waiting for a 'yes/no' on that question I've asked you twice. "I don't like long distance relationships" isn't an answer, but one of the reason you could say no. Also I won't be able to see you for a week or more/less until after the 12th. I only have $50 to my name and need it for gas, coming to get you costs about $40...

Vel, ty for helping me out financially. I may still need a little help until things get situated, and we need to setup a budget.

Oni, mow the lawn you hippy. I'm sorry, but it looks like we won't be able to build that happy file server at the house...

Urushihara, I'd have something to say to you, but we never see much of each other... that might change soon.

Finally, I've decided, I need to move to GR. Once I can figure out how I'm paying for it, I'm doing so. I'd be getting a 2 bedroom apartment. I'm looking at apple ridge on M-45 (Lake Michigan Drive near GVSU), so if someone wanted to tag along that can hopefully pay rent.

Wit and Calculus: Missouri Day One

8:52 PM Central Time.

I am sitting on the Chicago – Saint Louis Amtrak with a little over an hour left to go. Today started off rather well, left my house at around 8:30 AM to go to the train station in Kalamazoo. Thanks Josh! At the train station I met a panhandler named Sheryl who claimed to be from Saint Louis when I told her that was where I was heading. I'm sure if I'd been going to Chicago she would have been from there too. The Kalamazoo Metro station had few more people for me to meet. I met a kindly one legged grandmother whose name I unable to catch in my time there. She had her daughter with her, an absolutely stunning woman by the name of Beth and her grandson Tobin. Tobin was just in awe of everything around him, everything made him giggle except for his mother cleaning his breakfast off of his face. My yawning seemed to tickle him greatly, apparently not getting enough sleep is humorous to an eight month old. I took their picture for them. The train was late so I didn't get on the road until 10:30 or so eastern time. I helped Grandma get her bags out to the train and now she's on her way to Louisiana where Grandpa will be picking her up from the train station. Apparently she was Tobin-sitting while mommy and daddy were on vacation in Brazil. Nice catch, Tobin's dad.

On the Kalamazoo – Chicago train I was set next to a fella in a worn black leather jacket. It was 10:30 in the morning and he was already well into his fourth beer, it's unsurprising that he had a resemblance to Lou Reed. I guess he was walking on the wild side this morning. We made small talk about our destinations, I to Saint Louis and he to San Francisco. He mentioned a bar called Cal's in Chicago that had the cheapest damn beer in the city because it had been a bike messenger bar back in the day. Information noted. There was an older woman sitting across from me I chatted with as well. I overheard her on the phone, I think her name was Alfreda. She was on her way to visit her son, his wife, and her grandchildren north of Chicago and she had just retired from a pharmacological job somewhere so she was on her little retirement vacation. I didn't catch the name of the gal next to her, but apparently her daughter in-law is in the hospital for a condition I was unable to discern from overhearing her conversations. When we got to Chicago the fella next to me woke up and introduced himself as Dave. He mentioned Cal's again and brought up baseball since we passed the field where the White Sox play. Turns out he's a Detroit fan anyway. Good. He asked me how long my layover was in Chicago, but at only an hour it was too short to go to Cal's for a couple of cheap beers, too bad. Dave is on his way to San Fran, as he says, hopefully indefinately. On the way out of the train I caught a conversation between Dave and the gal with the sick daughter in-law. She got an update call and she's doing just fine.

Sitting in Union Station I couldn't connect to any wireless networks around so I played Sudoku instead. I was sitting next to a businessman who I would guess was on the phone with his wife explaining that when he met with some Germans to discuss some deal or other they had filled him with beer. I got in line for my train because I misheard a boarding announcement. I was standing next to a woman whose name escapes me at the moment, but she was my line buddy. And what a buddy she was. Our train ended up being delayed for over an hour. She was heading somewhere in southern Illinois and she was worried about making it on time so she could take the bus home. There was a fellow going to Saint Louis too, but I think he got on the wrong train. Our train doesn't have a business class and that's what his ticket says. I think he was on the 307. He asked me if our line was the Saint Louis train, and I said yes. Sorry mister businessman. I also briefly talked to a woman with three children who were surprisingly well behaved for having to wait so long. Mother Hen and her clan are on their way to San Antonio, they won't reach their destination until 10:30 or so tomorrow night.

The train ride to Saint Louis hasn't been as much fun, I've been mainly surrounded by old folks and I wanted to watch a couple of movies. I watched August Rush and Atonement. Both are excellent flicks I would certainly recommend to anyone who has not seen them. I wanted to cry like a baby at the end of August Rush it was so darn happy and Atonement was just excellent. Both very emotional movies. To counter balance that, I'm going to be watching Fargo and The Princess Bride on my way back from Missouri.

Today was a strange day for me indeed. It really opened my eyes to things and I hope it changed my perspective. I hope Grandma makes it to Louisiana ok. I hope Dave finds what he needs in California. I hope that Alfreda has a great time with her family and enjoys her retirement to it's fullest. I hope that lady's daughter in-law is ok. I hope my line buddy makes it back to her city in time to catch the bus home. I hope Mother Hen and her chillins have an uneventful trip back to San Antonio.

I hope.

Everyone has a story. Sometimes they are happy, sometimes they are sad. I wish I had time to hear them all.

Brian: WE’LL DO IT LIVE!

I realized something today about blogging. Titles are evil. When I come up with a title. It sets the direction of the entire post. I always have trouble veering from that direction to write anything else that’s on my mind. Well, I shouldn’t say “always”… sometimes I write things that are quite random indeed. Anyway, I think without titles blogging becomes easier. If I just wrote short posts perhaps I could stay on topic, hit the post button, then move on. If I have more to say there’s no problem with starting an entirely *new* post. However, there’s a point at which one can post too many things. Perhaps an appropriate balance is the holy grail of blogging. Or, perhaps it’s all relative and I can post as much as I want without anyone even reading it in the first place.

I’ve been watching the olympics. Table tennis mostly. I don’t really participate in any of the other sports so I just kind of stare in awe when i watch things like swimming or gymnastics. Table tennis, on the other hand, is something I play quite a bit at work. So much, in fact, that maybe it should be on my business card. Perhaps the job title of “Software Engineer” underneath the text “imeem.com” presumes a certain level of table tennis skill and I should just leave it at that. Perhaps…

This weekend was quite a weekend in San Francisco. At least from where I was standing. Saturday the city performed a simulated terrorist attack in which many local and federal agencies participated. They even got some students to come out and pretend to be dead or dying from the adverse effects of said attack. Cool huh? I got pictures: simulated terrorist attack on San Francisco

After that, zombies started to take over the city. Starting at 2pm, zombies (and a few people wearing masks and fake blood) met at SFMOMA to begin terrorizing helpless citizens. At the rallying cry of BRAAAAIIIINNNSSSS, the zombies began following a predetermined path through downtown up to the Transamerica Building. At this point, the zombies saw a large group of scientology protesters and attacked mercilessly. I’ll leave out the gory details suffice it to say, there was a zombie/protester dance-off. Then the police showed up and the zombies quickly shuffled off to Chinatown.

Ah Chinatown. A few blocks of which are year-round tourist central. Turns out it’s actually a lot like China because actual Chinese people live here. But don’t mind that, there are plenty of trinkets and dim sum. I always wonder how much tourists have heard about San Francisco. Sure they’ve heard it’s a beautiful place and there’s a lot to do and so many cool things to see and the weather is always pretty good. Do they know about all the protests? The crazy homeless people? The Castro? I’d bet very few of them have heard of the flash mobs. They’re such a local thing and by their very nature, don’t exist for long enough for any big news crews to show up. Anyway, getting back to the point, a flash mob through Chinatown is hilarious. All the tourists, of course, have cameras so you’ll see them clicking away happily without a care in the world. Maybe they think something unusual is happening and it’ll be on the news later and they’ll be able to say “oh I was there, I have pictures!” Maybe they’re just confused and they need to take pictures so they can go back to their hotel and digest what has just transpired. They’re certainly not afraid that zombies are taking over the city. That’s rather unfortunate…

After Chinatown, the rallying cry came again and the mob continued through Union square, interrupting a Korean Day festival that was taking place and causing quite a stir among the attendees. For the final stop, the zombies proceeded to the cable-car turnaround at the end of Powell St where some performers were playing drums. Everyone got into the zombie spirit of things and… just stood there waiting in line for the next cable car. Oh well, at least we tried. Pictures are here: zombie mob

On Sunday, Barack Obama came to San Francisco and made a record $7.8 million. I didn’t make it out to that event (the $2,300 entrance fee was a bit high for me) but I did take pictures of the Gumball 3000 start just one week earlier at the same location: Gumball 3000 Pictures. Of course, the entrance fee to that event was $100,000 but they let people hang out and stare at the cars for free. I’m all about the free.

In other news, I’ve fallen somewhat in love. It’s going well. I was getting so sick of caring about myself all the time it’s nice to have someone else to care about. Perhaps there will be more on that later. Perhaps…

In even other news, they’re now selling absinthe at Safeway. It’s the good kind too: Lucid Absinthe Superieure from France. And the not-quite-so-good-but-still-absinthe-kind from Alameda (just across the bay): St George Absinthe Verte. I’m excited that people are catching on and actually stocking this stuff instead of being afraid that it’s still illegal or something. It’s good stuff, and quite a bit different than any other kind of alcohol.

In even other news, I’m reading The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. It’s pretty classic (seeing as it’s 30 years old and #1 in the Genetics and Zoology categories on Amazon). I like it a lot.

In even other (looks like I’m running out of text-alterations) news, I’ve been working on a fancy perl script lately that makes Meevoos. You can see my most recent example here: Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy (Meevoo). The process involves extracting each frame from a video, then recreating each frame using tile-size versions of other frames. It makes more sense if you look at it. So, just do that.

Since I’m running out of text-alterations, I’ll just treat this “other” news as a new paragraph. Hey, look at that, more news! I’ve been meeting with a local group of hackers called NoiseBridge. We’re trying to pull together enough money and people to create a sustainable “hackerspace” where people can go to be creative and make things using computers, or microcontrollers, or lasers, or anything really. The group will incorporate as a non-profit once we get the paperwork finished up and we already have a promising location to begin operations in the office upstairs from the EFF.

Well that’s probably enough news to keep you busy for a while. It’s certainly keeping me busy.

I’ll leave you with a cut off of Sting’s new album:

So I'm trying to enjoy my last free week I'm gonna have. After that, 40hr+ work weeks. I will basically only be free on sat. and sun. Unless I'm shipped out of town.

While the other player or computer is firing off an unblockable, I'm too busy staring at the flames going, "Oooh shiney". And they're not really that impressive. I like the details they put on the models, and the fact that everyone is actually "Wearing" their outfits. Not just a texture sitting over a body, but fitted to the character with it's own polys. But that then leads me to the physics engine. Some one tell me why namco fealt the need to use the Havok engine on everything, but most noticably, the breasts in the game?....

I have a customer that has felt it necessary to secure the network ports in their conference rooms. The goal was to make it impossible for untrusted computers to access the LAN and if possible dump them on to a VLAN that would allow them only Internet access. Rather than detail the whole project I’ll just provide a couple of links that helped me out and explain a couple of difficulties I faced. I am still working on the guest vlan portion of the project and will update the config below when that portion of the project is complete.

Switch Configuration

We used a Dell PowerConnect 6248 switch in this case. During R&D for this project I also made 802.1x authentication work on a PowerConnect 6024 and a Cisco Catalyst 2950 series. I actually made things work with the Catalyst first by following this article http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2950/software/release/12.1_9_ea1/configuration/guide/Sw8021x.html. The important bits of the config for the PowerConnect 6248 are as follows:

*snip*
! This enables dot1x globally
dot1x system-auth-control
! This sets up the radius server. 192.168.1.5 is a Windows Server 2003 server running IAS
aaa authentication dot1x default radius
radius-server key "abcdefg"
radius-server host 192.168.1.5
exit
!
! This port requires authorization. This is the default.
interface ethernet 1/g1
exit
!
!This port is forced into an authorized state.
interface ethernet 1/g2
dot1x port-control force-authorized
exit

Windows Client and Server Configuration

To configure the clients and server I used this article: http://alextch.members.winisp.net/802.1x/Defending%20your%20internal%20network%20with%20802.1x%20and%20Microsoft%20PKI.htm.

This article pretty much got me where I needed to be but here’s a couple of things to note.

You have to make the registry change found on Page 13. There doesn’t seem to be any way around it. If you find one, let me know. The plan is to make the change in a logon script.

How your computer names are stored in the certificate issued to the clients is important. The default settings had been changed on the system in this case and this caused some problems. I successfully used a Subject Name Format of None and checked DNS name. I also used a subject name format of Fully Distinguished Name with nothing checked underneath. I do not fully understand these options so YMMV.

Keeping that in mind you shouldn’t have any problems implementing this using the two articles that I linked to. I may eventually get really motivated and take screen shots.

UPDATE!

I spent manyl hours over the last couple of weeks trying to get this to work well in production. We were seeing very odd behavior. At times ports that had been moved to the guest vlan would mysteriously be moved vlan 1 once the host was disconnected and would stay their for long periods of time. Vlan 1 does not normally contain any ports with this configuration. At once point we had two ports stay in vlan for more than eighteen hours. It was weird to say the least.

We tried my Catalyst 2950 in the customer’s production environment and it worked perfectly and exactly as I would expect it to. We finally gave up on the PowerConnect and my customer decided to just buy some used 24 port Catalyst 2950s.

What we ended up doing was creating a trunk port on the PowerConnect 6248 that supplied both the guest and trusted vlans to a trunk port on the catalyst. Since my Catalyst is not layer 3 capable the PowerConnect still handled routing, DHCP relay, and ACLs. The Catalyst was just responsible for 802.1x.

When I get my switch back I’ll post the important bits of the config.

It’s been a long time since my last blog entry. I thought I would use this entry to post a few of the things that I’ve been doing over the Summer. I’ll keep it short and sweet and let the videos do most of the talking.

I spent the past month on the 2008 North American Solar Challenge. WMU’s car is called the Sunseeker. Here is a video of Alex, one of our drivers, doing a figure eight:

I am visiting my parents in China for the next three weeks, and I just got into Shanghai on Thursday. I spent my first whole day here yesterday. Here is a video from the window of the restaurant that we went to last night (Laris):

Laris was right on the Bund, and you could see Pudong from the windows. The lights on the buildings were unbelievable. Two of the buildings (on the right) turn into huge video screens at night. They also had video screen ads on boats. Here is another video from the window:

After having dinner, we went next door to the Glamour Bar which was built inside one of the original Bund buildings:

We plan on going to Pudong today. I’ll try to post some pictures or videos. Also, we are leaving for Beijing tomorrow.

chibiskuld: What is Love?

Love is when you trust someone so much that you share every last dark secret, and every bright one. When you can trust that person, not only with your secrets, but to trust them to go inside your head to change things up a bit. Some say that you should never let a woman change you, that you should be yourself. Okay that's fine, at first, but after you feel you can trust her and have a desire to change for her, that's when you know you love her.

Love is also when you enjoy being with a person so much, that you cherish every moment of it. That even when she makes wise cracks about you, you simply laugh it off. That you can talk to for hours and never be annoyed.

What isn't loveNULL
Love is not sex appeal, if you feel that sex appeal is important, then you should reevaluate. Sex appeal does not alter trust, nor does it make for a loving relationship. Sex appeal is physical, not mental. Love is a state of emotion, not instinct. Sex appeal is there to lure us to each other to keep us breeding, not for us to enjoy each others presence. If the only reason you are with someone is because they are cute and showed you a little of their time, then try again.

So with that said, do you really love who you loveNULL
I know I do. And that'll never change as long as she let's me talk to her, and trust her. I know I broke her trust once, I didn't mean too, and I regret it. But I won't let that ever happen again.

grg: Horrible Energy (Act II)

And now for the horrible part!

Hah! I bet you thought the energy crisis was the horrible part! Well… yeah… it is pretty horrible… Anywho! Let’s go watch a movie! Err… Musical… umm… sing… along… blog.

Some of you may have already heard about, and/or have been watching the 3-part, online miniseries entitled: “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.” For those who haven’t, Joss Whedon (world famous for his work on Firefly/Serenity) has created another masterpiece. The low budget, superhero musical stars Neil Patrick Harris as the evil Dr. Horrible (yet still the protagonist) and Firefly’s Nathan Fillion as his arch-nemesis: Captain Hammer.

The story follows Dr. Horrible’s desires to become great, and even greater desire to talk to this girl he sees every week at the laundromat. Captain Hammer continuously gets in Dr. Horrible’s way. All the while, Bad Horse (an ominous super bad guy) entices Dr. Horrible’s desire to become even more evil. The Evil League of Evil is recruiting, and Dr. Horrible must impress Bad Horse to get in. Hilarity, and singing, ensues.
The format is a unique one. The series is streamed right onto drhorrible.com, free of commercials, and free of all advertisements. As I am writing this, Acts I and II have been released, and Act III (the Denouement) will be coming out tomorrow (July 19th). Also, according to Joss Whedon’s “Master Plan” posted on the website: “All acts will stay up until midnight Sunday July 20th.” So, you better watch them quickly, because they won’t be up long.

They won’t be gone forever though, don’t worry. Eventually they plan on releasing all three acts on dvd, with a few bonus features/scenes etc. So, why is Joss Whedon such an awesome guy? Or, maybe you’re more likely to be asking “why is he doing this?” Well, he tells a tale about “writers in the forest” getting “very mad with the Forest Kings.” Of course, he is talking about the recent writers strike. He mentions writers looking for ways to “create new work that circumvented the Forest King system.” So this is his contribution. Bypassing everything else, and delivering content straight to your monitors. With the power of the internets! (oh hey internets has a wikipedia article!)

So I hope I’ve shared some valuable, and enjoyable information with someone today. Enjoy.

grg: Horrible Energy (Act I)

There are a couple interesting things out there that I thought I should bring to your attention.

Lets talk energy first. America’s 117th richest person, T. Boone Pickens, has brought it upon himself to inform us that we are importing 70 percent of our nation’s oil consumption. According to Pickens: “we will send $700 billion dollars out of the country this year alone — that’s four times the annual cost of the Iraq war.” T. Boone, as well as (i hope) the rest of America, want to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
Mr. Pickens has a plan. The aptly named “Pickens Plan” includes transferring one of the sources of our nation’s electrical energy supply towards transportation, and replacing it with wind power. There are a few large benefits to this plan. He claims we will be able to cut foreign oil consumption by up to 38 percent, which would equate to about $300 billion per year. That’s American money, that stays in America. If successful, I think this plan could also provide cleaner energy alternatives, as well as provide jobs that would benefit our nation even more.

The thing that is most baffling to me about this whole situation we are in, is that our leaders and politicians aren’t really addressing our energy crisis in any credible fashion. No one seems to be talking about weening ourselves off of foreign oil. The sooner our nation’s “leaders” acknowledge this crisis, in more than a passing thought, the better off we all will be.

Stimulus checks and gas holidays for example… “oh hey, our nation is running out of money because foreign oil is so expensive… we can fix this problem, just give the citizen’s more money, they won’t just spend it on more gas or anything, …”

Well, as i have linked to twice already, the Pickens Plan has a website: www.pickensplan.com. Check it out, there are lots more neat tidbits of info to learn about, and more details etc etc.

The second interesting thing I wanted to talk about is… well this post is already rather long. I think I am going to put it in my next post. Stay tuned!

If we didnNULLt meet back then
I wouldnNULLt be having nightmares in my dreams
If you werenNULLt born in this world
Then I wouldNULLve died without knowing jealousy or pain

The one who you wanted
Was a person completely opposite of me
I can see that weNULLre connected by a crimson thread...
INULLm a blue thread

Try touching me; my heart now
Falls in love on its own, gets hurt on its own
DonNULLt touch me; if my thoughts canNULLt be fulfilled
Then only an indigo bruise remains inside of my chest

Wishes on a night when the stars shoot
Are for you to fall out of love
So then, with a nonchalant face
INULLll hold it out, INULLll hold it, rightNULL An umbrella over my heart

When youNULLre happy
ItNULLs while INULLm unhappy
The crimson thread is as strong as itNULLs sadNULL
ThereNULLs a blue thread of tears

Try noticing me; again my tears
Spill out on their own, cool on their own
I want you to dump me, if my wish doesnNULLt reach you
It canNULLt end, it canNULLt end
Even though INULLm looking at you more than she does
Even though INULLm only looking at you

The crimson thread sways back and forth and shinesNULL
The blue thread is wet

Try touching me; my heart now
Falls in love on its own, gets hurt on its own
DonNULLt touch me; if my thoughts canNULLt be fulfilled
Then only an indigo bruise remains inside of my chest

No... I'm not turning emo on you, but this strangely rings a bell.

grg: Update?

Well now, I seem to be pretty consistent in not updating my blog. Let’s change that shall we. Guess I’ll reminisce on the past few years that I haven’t been posting…

Life at Western is still quite interesting, although rather hectic at times. Between school, work, and 2 RSOs, I seem to have my hands quite full most of the time. But… school has been out a few months, and I am relaxing. Relaxing a lot. Tinkering with and attempting to fix my computers, making websites, seeing movies, playing games, hanging out with friends. That about sums up my summer so far.

Ah… one noteworthy occasion I should probably mention. Zak and I drove to Chicago to see Dethklok live. And while it was a worthwhile experience in itself, we had the rare opportunity to meet the band they were playing with: “…Trail of Dead” (their full name being “And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead”).

Dethklok played an awesome set, with a constant animated backround being projected on a large screen behind them. In between a few of the songs, they had the cartoon band on the screen doing wacky things, like barging in on Murderface, on the toilet, after he decided, abruptly during the show, to walk off stage and go to the bathroom. Overall, it was like another episode from the tv series, there was a plot going on during the show, where the “world leaders” (?) were plotting against Dethklok and attempting to kill them with some kind of nerve gas. They also played the music videos to most of the songs in the background while the “real life” band played the songs. While Dethklok played a pretty awesome show, it was even more worth it to see the opening band.

The two bands did not really mesh well together, and most of the fans appeared to be metalheads, so they were very unreceptive towards Trail of Dead, who were definitely not a metal band. Trail of Dead kicked off the show with an amazing performance. Rather daringly, one of the front men, Jason Reece, jumped into the audience and began walking over the seats, singing and dragging his microphone cord along with him. The metalheads were not impressed. Zak and I were loving it though. This show was the last the two bands would be playing together. Trail of Dead’s next show, they would be the headlining band. You could see some of the band member’s frustration from having to put up with such a disrespectful crowd night after night. They played their hearts out anyway, and finished off with a bang. The bassist tossed his bass guitar inbetween the two drumsets on stage, one of the drummers kicked his drumset forward, and everything was getting smashed and thrown. Until finally Conrad (the main front man) kicked over, and breaking one of Dethklok’s amps, unbeknownst to the crowd at the time. They ended up having to buy it from them, and Dethklok had to use one of the Trail of Dead’s amps during their set.

Following the Trail of Dead’s set, Zak and I went up front and began conversing with Aaron, the main drummer. We told him we were from Michigan, and noticed that they were heading over our way for their next show, but we didn’t have any tickets. Aaran just shrugged and said “that’s no problem, we can get you in.” After Dethklok played we bought some Trail of Dead shirts, and headed to the tour bus. We got some autographs, and had a beer with the band, ’cause how often do you get to say “I drank with a famous rock band.”

So the next day, after our classes were over, Zak, Dan H., Dan Z., and myself, (they let us bring 2 other people in for free as well) headed out to Pontiac to watch another Trail of Dead show. Only this time, they seemed a lot happier, and played a much longer and more intense set. They didn’t smash their stuff this time. I guess they weren’t in the mood to. Or perhaps they just don’t always leave a “trail of dead.” But the whole experience was worth it, and I got a pair of drumsticks and had Jason Reece and Aaron Ford both sign ‘em.

Well that turned out to be a fairly long post for just one story. So I won’t bore you with any others for now. Maybe I’ll reminisce some more later.

Note for nVidia, KDE4.1, and xorg. There's still some weird glitching with the rendering of composite features. But I noticed that going to Window Behavior > Desktop Effects > General > Advanced Options and unchecking "Direct Rendering", but leaving everything else checked fixes the problem. This doesn't seem to affect performance either.. I'm not quite sure what this REALLY changes, but I images it tells KDE to go through X to do composite, instead of straight to the driverNULL I dunno. But it cleans up the glitching.
